Elmhurst Garden Club Recieves National Recognition

Elmhurst Garden Club

The Monarch Initiative was an umbrella of activities (action items) that were fulfilled to complete the Elmhurst Garden Clubs' commitment to the Mayors' Monarch Pledge of the National Wildlife Federation. Mayor Morley signed this pledge for in April 2016. They completed 12 action items of the 25 suggested.

One of the action items in the Monarch Initiative was conducting/hosting the Children's Monarch Festival--of which the city provided the bulk of funding.

The other two first place awards were for their work at York Community High School (YCHS). They won a first place award for Community Beautification. This award was for their involvement in transforming the Interior Courtyard of YCHS from a place of pea gravel to verdant gardens.

The third, first place award was for Butterfly Sustentation. They transformed the Exterior Courtyard of York into a Certified Monarch Waystation and a Monarch demonstration garden.

They also were nationally recognized (no award given) for their window display of the Monarch Initiative at the Elmhurst Public Library. This window display showed the stages of butterfly growth, types of milkweed, the monarch highway, monarch fun facts listed on milkweed leaves, books and included a poster for the Children's Monarch Festival and the Garden Walk and Faire.

We are extremely proud of all the successes the Elmhurst Garden Club has seen this year! We wish them well and can't wait to see what they will do next!
